4 Cycling routes plus fun on the ferry

Scheldeland: four fun ferry trips

A trip on a boat: what's not to love? There's nothing nicer than floating on the glistening water, with the birds above you, the wind in your face and the smell of silty water in your nostrils.

Or wait, perhaps there is something even better: that you can enjoy with your bike in your hand. After which, you return to shore and can jump on your trusty steed to discover the magnificent Scheldeland region. Can't wait to get going? We have 4 must-do bike routes for you, in which the ferry is a fun feature. All aboard!

Back and forth by ferry

The car-free dyke paths and lush green towpaths are real assets of Scheldeland. No wonder then, that these bike routes are so popular with cyclists and walkers. The fact that the water plays a delightfully prominent role throughout the region means that many ferry services are provided. There are 12 in total, transporting you safely and smoothly across the river Scheldt, Rupel or Durme.

The Scheldeland region has more active ferries than anywhere else in Flanders. And they are all in intensive use. Fancy a ferry trip? With these 4 cycle rides you can feel like a captain of the water yourself for a while.

1 The Duvel Cycling route

A route dedicated to Duvel: what a wonderful idea! The 45-kilometre tour sets off in Heindonk and takes you past the Duvel brewery in Breendonk. Duvel lovers are also served up a treat along the way, with 4 information panels providing more information about this unique local brew.

But the beer is not the only thing to be experienced: the ferry is also a fabulous feature during this route. In fact, you travel on the Boom-Klein-Willebroek ferry, taking you across the Rupel. On the banks of this river you can stop for a while for a snack and a drink – in Boom, or in Klein-Willebroek.

Of course, the ultimate stop on this ride is the Duvel Depot, that you can visit with a guided tour. Do check the website beforehand and reserve a space. Then you will not be disappointed when you arrive.
